English: reliable XRPL consumers separate observation from action
Linux Journal’s XRPL example is a reliability pattern for payment backends, not a recommendation to wire a WebSocket callback directly to fulfillment. A WebSocket is useful because it delivers account and transaction activity with low latency. It is not, by itself, a durable business workflow. Connections can disappear, a process can restart during deployment, database writes can time out, and an event can be encountered again during recovery.
Start by subscribing only to the transaction or account activity the service needs. Treat each notification as intake. Confirm that the message is validated, inspect TransactionResult, and for payments verify the actual delivered_amount. Capture the transaction hash together with ledger index and ledger hash. Only then should the service decide whether a local order, entitlement, or fulfillment task may move forward.
The transaction hash is the natural idempotency key. Persist it before allowing repeated work to look new. A practical PostgreSQL record includes the hash, validated ledger information, result, delivered amount, processing timestamp, and an application status such as received, order-updated, fulfillment-pending, or complete. That status matters when the ledger record is safely stored but a subsequent operation did not finish.
Use one local database transaction when inserting the payment record and updating an order held in the same database. External effects need an additional boundary: a fulfillment API call should have its own idempotency strategy, retry policy, and evidence that it was sent. On restart, reconciliation can find a known payment whose order update or downstream request is unfinished. It can complete that specific step rather than charge ahead as if the payment happened for the first time.

Reconnect is transport recovery, not service recovery
Reopening a WebSocket only proves that new messages can arrive. It does not prove that the service received every relevant event while disconnected. After reconnecting, compare the last durable ledger checkpoint with ledger history, locate missed work, and reconcile it against the application table. A worker should finish interrupted work without duplicating it. This distinction protects both customers and operators from duplicate fulfillment, inconsistent order state, and untraceable incident handling.
Monitoring must extend past connection uptime. Track reconnect count, the most recently processed ledger index, end-to-end processing latency, duplicate-event count, validation failures, reconciliation backlog, and downstream failures. Logs that connect a transaction hash to validation, persistence, and later business processing make incident response materially more useful than a generic “payment received” entry.
The durable rule is simple: observe first, verify final ledger state, persist evidence, then perform an idempotent business action.
